Our View - Hoka Speedgoat Men
Designed in collaboration with trail running legend Karl Meltzer, the brand new Hoka Speedgoat replaces the renowned Hoka Rapa Nui. With similar technical trail terrain in mind, the Speedgoat has significantly reduced weight and slightly less aggressive rocker mechanisms in comparison to the Rapa Nui.
Starting with the midsole, the Speedgoat’s stack heights are 33.5mm and 28.5mm in the heel and forefoot respectively meaning it sits in Hoka’s Oversize cushioning range. The significantly higher volume of EVA compared to traditional running shoes means that the shock absorbing capacity of the Speedgoat is incredible. Reducing the impact forces encountered during running means that joints are better supported and the legs feel fresher for longer due to a reduction in fatigue.
The Hoka Speedgoat is built on a Balanced stage Meta-Rocker which offers a very naturally feeling roll from heel to toe-off thanks to the slightly upwardly curved toe and heels, but not quite as significant as the previous Rapa Nui Rocker. The rocking motion enhances the running efficiency by reducing the active push through following initial impact. To further enhance running efficiency the Speedgoat is built on a low (5mm) heel-to-toe drop and a H Shape Geometry which offers a wide, stable platform. A further benefit of the wide platform is increased width in the toe box which allows the toes to spread naturally and for swelling associated with long distance running.
Without doubt Vibram outsoles are world renowned for their exceptional grip and durability and it is therefore pleasing to see that Hoka have utilised this in the Speedgoat. The 4mm Megagrip is suitably aggressive for rocky technical terrain, grass and mud and is one of the best compunds you can get for wet rock. In addition to the grip, the vibram outsole is also durable and well capable of standing up to several miles on the road if needed making the Speedgoat an excellent choice for mixed terrain runs.
Moving to the upper, Hoka have really stripped back the weight whilst maintaining the secure holding of the foot. The single layer material of the upper utilises a no sew Speedframe which reduces the risk of hotspots and abrasions on the inside. Whilst welded microfiber underlays add an element of soft touch next to the foot. The welded synthetic support overlays originating from the lace eyelets provide the structure and support to hold the foot in place while running which is vital on twisty, turning technical mountain terrain.
The Hoka Speedgoat incorporates all of Hoka’s highly praised cushioning and fatigue reducing technology into a lightweight yet supportive package. The Speedgoat will suit many runners looking for a fast paced training or racing shoe that can cope with a variety of terrains.
