Our View - Ultimate Direction Mens Ultra Jacket V2:
Ultimate Direction have become one of the go to brands for trail running clothing and equipment and the original Ultra Jacket was one of the key products to drive this. Ultimate Direction have taken all the feedback about the original jacket and used this to make it even better.
The main change for the V2 Ultra Jacket is the fabric which has enhanced breathability and waterproofness with a 33,000mm water entry pressure and 29,000 moisture vapor transmission rate. These exceptional rates exceed the standards required for one of the toughest of endurance events the Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc and ensure you stay protected from both the outside and in.
The hand feel of the jacket is far more substantial than the original which is a good thing as it will increase durability and resistance against damage from rocks and branches etc. However, the weight is not significantly impacted with only 7g increase over the original (174g vs. 167g) and we feel the benefit will far outweigh this tiny penalty. The fabric also has a much nicer feel against the skin which is good thing if you need to wear the jacket over bare skin.
There will be a lot of times that you will be wearing a trail running jacket at the same time as a hydration vest and Ultimate Direction have taken this into consideration strategically positioning the underarm venting to ensure airflow and cooling is maintained even when wearing a pack. There is an inside stuff pocket to pack the jacket down small when not needed and this can also be used to carry small essentials.
The hood on the Ultra Jacket V2 is well featured with a wired brim and full adjustability to ensure a close fit that moves with your head so as not to interfere with your sight and also prevent it blowing off in high winds. Retained from the previous version is the ventilation mesh inside the hood which works well to keep the head from overheating.
Also retained from the original Ultra Jacket is the integrated hand cover which proved a huge hit with our customers to add an additional layer of protection to the vulnerable hands. When not needed these sit flat inside the sleeve so you won’t even notice they are there.
We loved the original Ultimate Direction Ultra Jacket and the small changes to the V2 make it even better. If you want a jacket that is perfectly suited to training and racing in the worst conditions, then this is a great choice.
