Some of the most popular products we currently sell are the OMM Core Range and as fans ourselves we can easily see why! But what is it and why is it so popular? We delve into the detail beneath the fluffy fuzz!
The OMM Core Range is a new concept in synthetic active insulation that provides the warmth of a fleece but with half the weight and bulk. This is achieved by weaving ultralight PRIMALOFT ACTIVE fibres onto a mesh which creates a super high volume and open structure. This loft traps pockets of air that body heat doesn’t pass through, effectively insulating your body. However, additionally, and oppositely, the fabric also has an open structure that allows air to pass through and cool the wearer by moving the insulating air pockets.
What this means practically is that you have one of the most versatile, low volume layering system available. Combine the CORE fleece with a windproof or waterproof shell and you have a really warm, weather resistant set up, but if the temperature rises and you need to cool off then you can thermoregulate by opening or removing the shell and allowing the breeze to naturally cool you.
A further advantage of the CORE fleece is that it works equally well wet or dry, so even if you need to put your shell back on when you start your descent after working hard to the summit, you’ll still stay warm. Plus, with exceptional moisture wicking properties when you do build up a sweat you won’t stay wet for long. For these reasons we’re big advocates of synthetic insulation over down for the UK weather conditions…because let’s face it, it’s more than likely going to rain and get wet at some point during your adventures!
As well as proving to be one of the most advanced materials, PRIMALOFT ACTIVE is also a really sustainable choice for the environment. It is made from at least 58% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material and is Bluesign and Oeke-Tex approved. Making OMM Core products perfect for doing battling with nature whilst also protecting it. OMM use three different weights of PRIMALOFT ACTIVE: 75g/m2, 125g/m2 & 250g/m2, the higher the value the warmer the material, but interesting also the higher the percentage of PCR material (75g = 58% PCR, 125g = 64% PCR, 250g = 100% PCR).
The OMM Core Range has been around for a couple of years now and the number of products has gradually grown over that time. This including standalone items such as the Core Hoodie, Jacket and the new Pullie, which can then be paired with a shell when needed. The Core range has been extended to accessories, jackets and sleep systems, including the brilliant Mountain Core Jacket that pairs 125g/m2 weight of PrimaLoft Active with a stretch nylon Flexile shell fabric for high levels of wind and water resistance whilst remaining highly breathable.
We can’t recommend the OMM Core enough for runners, walkers and even everyday wear to keep warm. When warmth to weight ratio is crucial there really isn’t anything to compete.
